General Safety Tips for Users:
The Secret Tribe social network has been created to help you express yourself, connect with your friends within the Secret Tribe and make new ones.
Important things to think about when you use a social network site:
- Who you let into your space,
- How you interact with them, and
- How you present yourself online
Here are some common sense guidelines that you should follow when using the Secret Tribe Social network:
-
Be careful about the type of information you post on your profile or in the chat rooms. Don't post any sensitive information such as your phone number, address, or specific whereabouts. The problem with posting personal information to the internet is that as soon as it goes online, you have lost control over who will see it and how it will be used.
-
People aren't always who they say they are. It's fun to connect with new Secret Tribe members and to get to know them. However, be careful about adding strangers to your friends list and avoid meeting people in person whom you do not fully know. If you must meet someone, do it in a public place and bring a trusted adult.
-
Harassment, hate speech and inappropriate content should be reported. If you feel someone's behaviour is inappropriate or if they are posting any information that is rude, or malice in nature, react. Report it to Beverly Cornwell at 086000 7787.
-
Don't post anything that would embarrass you later. Think twice before posting a photo or information on your profile or in the rooms. Pictures can be easily copied, altered, distorted and displayed in a completely different context than what you originally intended. The last thing that you want is your actions to hurt someone else!
-
The content you upload reflects who you are. Remember that the content that you upload on your profile or in the chat rooms reflects the type of person you are. Don’t be that type of person who uploads rude, crude or inappropriate material.
Remember the reason for us creating the Secret Tribe Social network is to provide you a safe place in interact with other secret tribe members and to have fun. Parent tips to begin a dialogue about safe Web practices:
1. Start a Conversation
-
Recognize the importance of social networking in their daily lives, similar to that of cell phones, email, and express an interest in understanding the role it plays. Talk to your kids about why they use Secret tribe, how they communicate with others, and how they represent themselves online.
-
Ask them why they like being online and who they hang out with online. Ask them to show you their friends, what they are listening to, and what interests them within the community.
2. Report Inappropriate Behavior
- Harassment, hate speech, and inappropriate content all violate the Secret Tribe Terms of Use and should be reported. If your kids encounter inappropriate behavior, they should report it to you and Secret Tribe, as the situation merits. To report a problem, please email Beverly Cornwell at customer-care@spur.co.za or call 086000 7787.
Remember:
Do not give out personal information! If someone should ask for your phone number, home address, your school’s name, etc. - Do not comply! Do not give out your Internet Service Provider’s supplied email address either. There are several good anonymous email services available, like Hotmail. (Parents are also encouraged to monitor their children's emails for inappropriate content, regardless of which service they use!)
You have the right to say NO! If at any time you feel uncomfortable chatting with someone, either end the chat, log out of the room, tell the person you do not talk about certain things, tell a Spur chat room moderator/operator, or tell your parents! Don’t allow harassment, ever!
